A big white duck and a lighthouse

In March I went to Long Island, New York to visit my son. On one lovely, cold winter day we went for a drive to the end of the island.

We were quite surprised to find a large…5.5 metres wide, 9.1 metres long and 5.1 metres high…white duck beside the road in Flanders.

It was built in 1930/31 in Riverhead, Long Island and moved to Flanders near the barns and marshes of a duck farm where it was used to sell ducks and eggs. There were once about 90 duck farms in the area. Now it is a souvenir shop selling very cute duck items. I doubt that you will leave without at least one.

A little further on, at the most easterly point of Long Island, we came to the Montauk Point Lighthouse. It sits magnificently on Turtle Point. It was the very first lighthouse built in New York State and is the 4th oldest active lighthouse in USA.

Construction was authorized by the Second United States Congress under President George Washington on April 1792. Building began on June 7, 1796 and was completed November 5th of the same year. The light flashes every 5 seconds and can be seen a distance of 17 nautical miles.

The area is beautiful, even in winter.

I would love to go back in the summer, when the trees are looking gorgeous and the towns spring to  life.

  1. Beautiful color palette…white and gray…wintery. I love the ocean in the wintertime. I gotta ask: which is bigger? The goose or the lighthouse?
