The cutest church in the whole wide world

Stella Maris church was designed by Michele Busiri Vici in the early 1960s. It sits, gleaming white, overlooking the harbour in Porto Cervo, on Costa Smerelda in the north of Sardinia.

I love the clock on the outside of the building, just to let sailors know what time it is, so they don’t miss mass.

The interior is beautifully simple. The furniture smells of the local juniper from which it is made.

There are gorgeous details all around the church.

  1. I must have missed this church, how cute!

    • You must go back to Porto Cervo!

      • I will, but only for this church!

  2. I am deeply in love with this church, this is all I can say!!!!!!!!!!! :)))

    • Isn’t is fabulous!

  3. What an intriguing-looking church! Hmmm…it looks like it has some Greek influence. I would love to know more about its history. I love the sleek shapes almost reflecting everything to do with the sea – shells, waves and conical shapes. Even the columns are interesting. I’ve never seen anything like this before; so, finding this church is a wonderful discovery. Thank you for sharing this lovely church with us, Debra. I look forward to your exploring more new adventures on Sardinia.

    • I would like to know more about it too, but I could find very little information about it at all.

  4. What can I say? Magnificent Simplicity… Poetry in stone…

    • It is absolutely stunning from every angle.

  5. It is gorgeous, Debra and your photos depict it to perfection.

    • Thank you. I would have liked to investigate the interior more…they have some interesting art…but there was something going on in there and I didn’t want to intrude.

  6. It’s absolutely beautiful. The scale seems right, to me, for communicating with the divine. A personal space.

    • It looks wonderful in it’s position above the harbour.

  7. Exquisite Debra! I am without words….!;-)

    • I think it is just beautiful…perfect.

  8. La bella!

  9. What a fantastic church, I have never seen anything like this before! So so beautiful and in such a fantastic location… I must go to Sardinia, it looks like they are having good weather as well…

    • It is cold and very windy, but there is no rain, so we are happy.

  10. That blue sky! Jealous! (rain was back again here yesterday!)This church looks adorable, I agree with the earlier comment on it looking greek, if I didn’t know it was Sardinia I’d think this was Santorini, circular white and blue roof against such a blue sky. Lovely!

    • The church did look a bit Greek, but not quite.

  11. I would never have guessed that this adorable church was done in the 1960s… at the time it seems like much of the world was bent on building the ugliest structures possible!

    • It was clearly built to fit in with the rest of the architecture in the town.

  12. This is really a cute church! The tower looks uneven, but that makes it even cuter.

    • I love the fact that it is not perfect in its structure.

  13. Definitely worth its own post. Roz

  14. Every picture is captivating.

    • It is stunning, isn’t it?

  15. Beautiful!

    • It looked gorgeous from every angle.

  16. How adorable! I love this church-it sort of reminds me of something you might see in Greece. Thank you for the wonderful photos.

    • It does look a bit Greek.

  17. What a beautiful church… fascinated me especially the windows with iron work in the colour of white… Amazing. Thank you dear Debra, with my love, nia

    • It was bright white in the sunshine.

  18. Italy is the land of Design! I know it for shure.

    • There are many gorgeous things here for sure.

  19. I thought the same thing Sandra did. The church looks almost Greek–but gorgeous. Cobalt blue roof is stunning.

Been out of town for a few days, finally getting back in the swing of things. Sorry to have missed a few of your posts, Deb.

    Hugs,
    Kathy

    • We had a lovely day in Porto Cervo and this church was a highlight.

  20. Your skies are always blue, beautiful!

    • The skies have not always been blue here in Sardinia, but we were lucky that day.

  21. That’s so enchanting – it looks like it has been built by fairies; or a sandcastle built by mermaids to call the sailors in. I love the terracotta roof tiles on the Italian buildings – what lovely images you are filling your head with. Stunning photos.

    • It is a gorgeous building in an amazing setting and the blue sea and sky set it off to perfection.

  22. 😀 To think that it was designed in 60’s make it even more interesting. Let alone it’s a home of praise! So amusing.

    • It is a great looking church….so white.

  23. It is gorgeous… as is the weather there by the looks of it. Thanks for showing us all those delightful details.

    • The weather has been patchy and the wind today could blow your head off!!!

  24. Don’t dare me, it’s not possible. This really HAS to be the cutest church in the whole world! x

    • I think it would be difficult to find a cuter one anywhere.
