Spring is here

It is now officially spring in Italy. My garden has been looking like spring for a while. It was a mild winter this year and the plants are further advanced than usual.

A lot of my gorgeous daffodils are almost finished, but there are a few still popping up.

Almost all of my peonies have appeared. The tree peonies are first and some of the herbaceous peonies are shooting up. Some are just pink points poking out of the soil and a couple are yet to appear. I do the rounds a few times a day to check on them.

The weeping cherry trees are flowering and the bees love them.

Rosemary all over the garden is covered in blossom and all types of butterflies and bees. 🐝 I wandered too close this morning and one chased me off.

Alyssum and snap dragons are still around from last summer and have flowers.

The hydrangeas have sprouted leaves and rhododendrons are growing flowers. Porcupines have been digging holes in their pots and in the garden.

It has taken years for the tiny daisies to thrive in my grass. Dozens of packets of seeds have been scattered all over and grown in seed beds. Finally there are flowers everywhere. I would love all the grassed areas to be full of these.

Porcupines have had a field day there as well. I have to stomp the dirt back into place. I have never seen a porcupine, but I know where they have been.

Lizards are appearing and enjoying the sun.

The peach tree has blossoms.

Violets are popping up everywhere.

Vinca is growing all over. I am digging it up from under the trees on the edge of the property and planting it in other spots.

An Australian kangaroo paw managed to survive the winter.

The girls are still looking good in the garden.

Tiny wild strawberries are appearing.

Wild primulas are all over the slopes.

Lots of daisies have survived the winter and have flowers.

A type of poppy seems to have come from nowhere.

This appears every year.

Bees love crocus.

Yellow ginestra and forsythia are brightening the garden.

A hedge of photinia that looked miserable for years has finally settled in and is covered in new growth.

Here are some random lovely things.

Spring is a wonderful time to be in a garden. Something new appears every day.

  1. Beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing them.

    • It is a lovely time of year.

    • We absolutely love all your spring flowers. The colours in Italy look so vibrant & the two girls look pretty among the flowers. Your Vinca looks so different to ours in Qld, yours looks like a creeper. Love your idea of daisies in the lawn.

  2. Magnificent Garden Debra, always a pleasure to see.

    • The garden in spring delights me. There is always something lovely to discover.

  3. Your garden is so beautifull!

    • It is lovely to watch things grow in spring.

  4. As always gorgeous but particularly spectacular this year!
    Molti grazie,
    Derin

    • The garden was started from scratch and it does get better every year. The warm winter meant that a lot of flowers survived and are still blooming.
Our new walls look wonderful now that things are growing in them. It was a difficult part of the garden to get working properly, but I think we are on the way now.

  5. Absolutely beautiful !!!

  6. Absolutely fabulous Debra. Your terracotta girls are beautiful. I have seen a couple of ideas for my garden from your photos to pair with the ideas I have just gained from the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show over the last 3 days.
I will also contact you regarding our visit to Florence, Milan and Venice next year for any recommendations for places to stay and visit.
Also, we saw a beautiful Iris Van Herpen dress at the the NGV’s Triennial. Will you be back for the exhibition at GOMA later in the year?
Can’t wait to get back to Florence!

    • I will be back for the exhibition at GOMA, I am looking forward to it.
I am happy to help with your Italy trip next year. There is a post I wrote on Florence called Things I like in Florence.
If you type that in the search box it will come up. It is a fairly good overview of things to see and do in Florence.
Milan and Venice are in the archives too, but it need to do a list for them too.

  7. I know that it’s Autumn when pictures of your beautiful spring garden start to appear on your blog! I didn’t know there were different types of peonies too!

    • Spring here is wonderful. We have just done a trip through the Maremma area in southern Tuscany. The hills are almost iridescent green now…impossibly beautiful.
There are tree peonies, herbaceous and hybrid peonies with dozens of varieties. I am very happy that I can grow them.

  8. Your garden at Casa Debbio is just beautiful, Deb…It has grown so much since our lovely visit
