Faces in Oxford

When walking through Oxford it is always quite clear that you are being watched. Faces peer down from buildings and walls…

I find these faces fascinating. Who sculpted them and why?

  1. Aren’t these faces intriguing! I’ve never been to Oxford but I have just posted a series of photos of manikins and dolls in Surry Hills, Sydney, which you might fined intriguing. The doll seems so life-like and yet there’s that impenetrable, faraway look. Great fun! xx Rowena

    • I love finding faces wherever I go. Oxford was a treasure trove. I love your dolls.

      • Thank you very much, Debra. There seemed to be a common thread there xx Rowena

  2. The Oxford gargoyles are fabulous and you could spend days admiring them in detail. The stonemasons had plenty of imagination. Here is a map that shows where to find the majority of them
    Great photos, Deb!

    • This is great. I clearly missed lots. I will have to go back.

  3. Such a wide variety … and I imagine only a snippet of the faces present in Oxford.

    • Yes, I only scratched to surface.

  4. Love this collection!

    • Thanks, there were some great faces watching us.

      • 😀😀

  5. Don’t think I’d want to meet up with some of those faces

    • Me either. I think they were designed to terrify students into studying.

  6. You certainly have the gift for finding interesting subjects

    • Travelling provides a never ending supply of interesting things.

  7. I have always wanted to go to Oxford and for our next trip to UK next year I think I will add it to the itinerary thanks for the reminder.

    • Oxford is beautiful, don’t miss it.

  8. What an excellent collection you’ve shared.

They don’t make ’em like that anymore. 🙂

  9. They can be quite sinister can’t they, although one of them looks quite contemporary. I like the little fellow with the book, he makes me think of Quasi Modo.

  10. What a rogues gallery, Debra! Great captures. 🙂

  11. What a managerie of faces! I find them each so intriguing

  12. The expressions on the faces are all a bit alarmed! As if they saw something shocking! 🙂
