Catch the wind

I am at Main Beach on the Gold Coast for a while. Late this afternoon I went for a walk along the beach. It was quite windy and I was delighted to see kite surfers in the water.

There was one in particular who caught my attention. He was fascinating to watch.

He was clearly having the time of his life. The look of delight on his face made me smile. He was incredibly skilled at handing the kite and the board…take a look.

…and just watch him fly. I’m sorry the photos are a bit blurry, but it is just my ordinary camera and he was moving very quickly.

Even this seagull was impressed.

Kite surfing looks like incredible fun…I wish I was 16 instead of 60.

The next day I found another one for you to admire.

  1. From beautiful streets of Florence to the incredible Australian coast… tanto bellezza!

    • I know I am very lucky to be able to stay in such gorgeous places

  2. Very fond memories of Main Beach! We also wish we were much younger… but we cannot complain. Cold and miserable throughout Europe, so enjoy your time on the beach, Debra.

    • This is where I grew up. I absolutely love the surf. I think it would be incredible to be able to kite surf. I was imagining myself up there on that board…of course, it will never happen.

  3. Love the pictures following the flight of the kite-surfer – such a fascinating sport! I often wonder how the skier keeps his feet on the board – special glue or something? What a joy to skim and soar over sea and air! Sport in our time (50s and 60s) was kept very simple. I remember skimming along wet sand on a skim-board. That was fun, too!

    • I remember our coolite body boards that would rub the skin off your belly if you were in the water too long…which we always were. I also remember falling of skim boards and hitting the hard, wet sand.

      • Yes, I remember those coolite boards! The board was so light that I felt as if I would be carried away with the wind whooshing underneath it instead of riding along with the waves. No matter, it was still lots of fun! We were lucky to enjoy those simple pleasures.

  4. I am glad to see these beautiful photographs, thanks.

    • I certainly had fun standing on the beach watching this boy.

  5. Looks like a fun place. I wish I were 16 instead of 51! Yikes, I would KILL myself doing that.

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    • Doesn’t it look like the best fun you could have? If I was a teenager I would have to try it.

  6. WOW he is good. Like beautiful cheography in the air.

    • He was amazing. I watched him for ages, he certainly had stamina as well as skill.

  7. We saw these guys too when we were at Broadbeach a few weeks ago. We stood transfixed watching one in particular who had his very own film crew. Truly spectacular stuff.

    • I wonder if it was the same one. This boy was doing incredible things with that kite and board and he was having a ball.

  8. Aren’t they impressive with their manouvers and flying through the air.

    • I was amazed and delighted watching him. I wonder how long it took him to become this good.

  9. aren’t they exciting to watch.. great shots! c

    • It was amazing…he was fearless. He was going incredibly fast through the water and the air. It must be terrifying until you get used to it.

      • Windsurfing is like that, the wind hits and wooshes you up and off! c

  10. I watched one not far from home on the Columbia River in Oregon. Amazing what they can do in the air. I was fascinated. Love your photos…exhilarating!

    • I have never seen it done so well before. I couldn’t keep my eyes off him.

  11. Oh it would be fun wouldnt it. I’d love to have a go, but I think I’m too much of a scaredy cat these days.

    • I certainly won’t be trying it any time soon, but I would if I was much younger.

  12. “There’s never been a girl who ever grew older than 19 in her heart!”

Robert Anson Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land.

    • In my head I don’t feel more than 19, but my mirror tells me otherwise.

  13. How lovely – I love Rob’s comment – that shall be my new mantra. I doubt however that this 19 year old would take flight like the kite surfer – take fright more likely.

    • Perhaps we could try it together. It would be quite a laugh for anyone watching.

  14. how wonderful! i wish i could have seen that too !

    • I would love to do it, but I know that would be impossible, but it was enough fun watching him in action.

  15. Great captures of kite surfing. Well done.

    • It was amazing to watch…I am amazed at what they can do with a kite and a surfboard

  16. A nice part of the Gold Coast, enjoy your time in Main Beach 🙂

    • Main Beach is where I grew up. It always feels like coming home even though it has changed a lot since the 50s, 60s and 70s.

  17. We made and flew giant kites for several years – so lovely to see these photos, thanks Deb! xx

    • It was perfect day for kites of all kinds.

  18. I know that’s not Bagni! 😉 Your homeland looks wonderful … and the way our winter has been, the Australian beaches are a good dose of warmth!

    • The weather in Bagni di Lucca has been very ordinary. I chose a good time to come home for a while.

  19. I think he would have caught my attention too. 🙂 How fascinating it is to watch really skilled people doing water sports. They make it look so easy. Fabulous action shots, Debra. 🙂

    • I could have watched him for hours. He did make it look easy, but I can’t even imagine where you would start.

  20. Nah, even at 16 I couldn’t have done that.

  21. Looks like some very enjoyable views down at Main Beach! Let me know if you’re in Brisbane at all, would love to hear about your latest adventures in person.

  22. Whoa! That looks so mighty high. Looks real fun, indeed. Not a wonder, why he’s enjoying it. Would be thrilled to try that out!

    • Doesn’t it look like fun. I really wanted to be on that board.
