I arrived in Bagni di Lucca to rain and cold…it is winter after all. I don’t mind, I think these cold misty days are beautiful. This is the view from my balcony early this morning.
There is a little bit of snow on the mountains around us.
The sun came out a bit later this morning and it turned into a beautiful day. I went for a walk up the hill opposite the apartment to look at our gorgeous village from above.
There is more rain and snow forecast…I love it.

If you’re going shopping, go to the small privately owned shops, like Patrizia’s in Villa, instead of the supermarkets. If more people had shopped at the alimentari around the corner from Debra, it would still be open. They’re treasures to be used and preserved.

Where’s La Primavera? Patrizia owns the fruit and veg shop next to the car park at Il Circolo. She has beautiful fruit and vegetables and is often less expensive than Cinzia’s stall in the Wednesday and Saturday market. Debra did a blog on her a while back. At the Saturday market you can do a lot of shopping from the small stall holders. There a particularly good one with specialities of the Garfagnana. I got something rare from him like salted capers or something like that. Unfortunately the butcher closed and only carries on up here at Casabasciana. I’m sure there are more small shops, but I mainly shop at the my village shop to help keep it alive and so don’t search out others. Debra, help. Please do some more blogs on our small independent shops.

I would be happy to do posts on the small shops in the area. I prefer to shop with independent retailers and markets. I rarely buy produce at supermarkets. The food is usually better from small operators and I like to see where the money is going. If we don’t support the family run businesses they will disappear and our choices will be fewer.

Today it was cold and raining…5 degrees. If you have a car you can visit some of the mountain villages. Most of the restaurants are open. Lucca is always an excellent day trip. Florence and Pisa are not too far away and it is a good time to visit museums and galleries at this time of the year.
