Silvery seas at Forte dei Marmi

On my last visit to Forte dei Marmi, on the coast near Bagni di Lucca, the sea looked amazing. It looked like a sheet of silver satin rippling under the sky. The sea and sky were almost the same colour and it created quite an eerie feeling.

This was one side of the pier. The other side looked quite different.

The view from the pier towards the marble mountains is always spectacular.

Later in the day the light changed.

  1. Quite spectacular change of colours. The multicoloured Tirrenian Sea instead of the usual blue one. Great photos.

    • The photos don’t really capture how beautiful it was. It was so still and quiet and a little strange.

  2. That looks wonderfrul – and to think I may be there in April this year. Want to go to that favourite restaurant of yours and order the fish with a glass of pinot grigio

    • We will definitely be going to Il Fortino for the branzino ravioli. No trip to Italy would be complete without it.

  3. Those sky photos are brilliant and it’s lovely to see the change of colours too 🙂

    • It was an incredible day there. It is different every time I go.

  4. how beautiful. i love it when the sea blends into the sky like that…religious experience stuff.

    • There was a very strange feeling there that day. Today it would be just grey and damp in the rain.

  5. I like the simplicity of these images. The last one is my favourite one.

    • I love the colour of the sea that day. I wish I had captures the feeling better.

  6. I loved these peaceful sea photographs… They are also so romantic seemed to me… The sea, the sky, you did amazing shots. Thank you dear Debra, have a nice week, with my love, nia

    • Thank you, it was an interesting day.

  7. What beautiful photos it does have a calming effect on when just to look at them simply stunning – Joanna

    • I grew up beside the sea and I love it. Forte dei Marmi has spectacular mountains and the sea…….perfect.

  8. OMG, Deb, that sunset is incredible!
    Hugs,
    Kathy

    • It was amazing to watch the sun slide into the sea.

  9. Very painterly photography…. beautiful!

  10. This is why I always stepped out when riding a boat. Beautiful pics Debra esp. the last two with the sun.

    • I do like to be beside the seaside.

  11. I live by the sea but unfortunately in these climes it never looks as blue as the sea in these images. I love the photos of the sunset.

    • I grew up beside the sea in Australia, but we have surf, quite different from this.

  12. peaceful, that’s the right word!
I will reblog your post on my blog to show your beatiful pictures 🙂

    • Thank you for that. I hope it gets lots of hits.

  13. Reblogged this on LuccaGuide and commented:
From a very nice blog, I am happy to reblog the last post of Debra talking and picturing Forte dei Marmi. This beautiful city is, like Viareggio, between sea and montains and the mix of shops, nature, sun, boats and people is unique!

  14. Love the blurry horizon and the red buoy. Debra how wonderful the sea in these shots looks so ‘exotic’, even to Australian eyes.

    • Yes, Forte dei Marmi looks quite different from Australian beaches.

  15. We take day trips to Forte every summer to visit friends who have a place there and I have to say it looks much more inviting off season. Same goes for Levanto, our usual hang-out; I love it when the beach chairs get put away the middle of September but the sea is still warm. I always feel as though the beach is reclaiming its true self then.

    • I am never in Italy in summer, I prefer to be here when it is more quiet. I love Forte dei Marmi, we go often for lunch at Il Fortina, for some of the best seafood. I struggle to decide between the branzino ravioli with scampi and the spaghetti ai frutta di mare.

  16. […] here, here, and here to see more about Il Fortino and Forte dei […]

  17. […] Forte dei Marmi, San Gimignano…… […]
