The Mille Miglia in the streets of Florence

As well as a beautiful boy sighting on Saturday we also saw some very beautiful cars racing through the heart of Florence. We came upon the race by accident – how lucky. The road was blocked at one end of the Ponte Vecchio and we had to make our way via a couple of back streets to get to the Lucca bus.  We caught sight of the cars winding their way down Via Roma on the way to the Piazza Signoria and again as they came out the other side.

coming down Via Roma

it would be more fun in the car

Neptune waiting in the Piazza Signoria

a very cute red car

they look a bit put out

red is a popular colour

I think red cars go faster

The Mille Miglia (thousand miles) is said to be “the most beautiful road race in the world”. It began as an open road endurance race in Italy and was run 24 times between 1927 and 1957. It was revived in 1982 and in May every year passionate motorists gather to drive the 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) across beautiful Italy.

Next year I am going to find out when it is happening and park myself in the Piazza Signoria and watch it go by.

  1. My mom always thought that people with red cars drove faster…maybe there’s something to it. When I read the email version of your post, I thought it was going to be a Ferrari rally; how nice to open and see these old, old cars. Love it.

    • I really want to see more next year. I have to plan it. Last year we arrived in Rome just as the race had finished and we missed the lot. Wouldn’t it be fun to be part of it?

  2. Hehe with that sequence of pictures and your captions, the statues do look a bit put out by the robbing of their attention! 😛

    • Yes, they look most cheesed off.

  3. Red always goes faster.
Zipping around Italy in one of those old cars would be rather fun I think… with large sunglasses and head scarf obviously.

  4. They told me that my comment problem has been fixed, lets see. Been too long since I was able to comment your blog.

I love this post. The idea of seeing all these classic automobiles in one of the most classical cities, really makes the photographer in me want to be there.

    Great imagery!

    • Hi Fidel, Nice to have you back. I am going back next year to really watch this race. I only caught glimpses of it – enough to make me want more.

  5. Great to see it in Lucca this year – see http://longoio.wordpress.com/2014/05/18/a-thousand-miles/
