This is one of the finest ancient Roman sites in Italy. The excavations of Ostia Antica are on a par with anything you’ll see in Rome itself and easily merit the half-day trip out.

Take the train from Roma Termini and get off one stop before Lido di Ostia. The site of Ostia Antica marked the coastline in classical times and the town which grew up here was the port of ancient Rome. It was a thriving place whose commercial activities were vital to the city further upstream.

Surprisingly, few tourists visit this place so you will virtually have it to yourself. I am not particularly keen on archeology, however, this site and the site of Hadrian’s villa are both well worth visiting. I’m so glad we were able to drag ourselves away from the retail delights of Via Condotti to experience a little culture of the ancient kind.

It is very spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a fair amount of walking.

We included a blog on it in May this year which was more pictorially detailed.
In one pic you mentioned the well preserved arches. The small ones in the walls were burial areas for people who were cremated pre Christian times
