The musical woodcutter

In Vergemoli we are very happy to have Sisto.

Sisto of Vergemoli

He lives directly below Casa Debbio at the very bottom of the village. He is about 80 years old, but he looks much younger I think.

He is a woodcutter as well as a carpenter. He cut this huge pile of wood himself last week and has been busy stacking it.

Sisto's wood

If you have followed the blog for a while you may remember that I have written about Sisto before. He has 100 speakers under the eaves of his house and most afternoons we can hear old Italian music or tango tunes echoing through the valley.

It is great to work in the garden, or to enjoy aperitivo on the terrace to the sounds of Sisto’s music…one of the many joys of being in Vergemoli.

  1. I love that he has speakers on the outside of his house!

    • It certainly looks impressive when you see them all.

  2. This is one of our fond memories of Casa Debbio – the beautiful music as we walked to the house…what a treasure.

  3. This is great. I love it! His house is beautiful!! So well cared for. A very precise man, I’d say. Pride of place. Nice pants too. And yes, he does look exceptionally good for eighty!

    • I saw him at the nursery the other day, buying plants. He was wearing a jacket and a tie. He looked very dashing.

  4. He certainly look se younger than 80!

    • He could pass for 20 years less.

  5. How very lovely to have Italian music coming up from the valley. 100 speakers !!! Sisto certainly enjoys music

    • We look forward to it in the afternoon. He doesn’t always do it, perhaps just when the mood takes him. Whenever I see him I tell him just how much I like it.

  6. What an amazing man Sisto is, especially for his age. His music must keep him young. 🙂

    • Music and hard work…did you see that wood pile?

  7. What a wonderful man and living his life to the full! I bet if that happened in Australia someone would have complained to the council for disturbing the peace! These stories of local people and the simple pleasures make your posts so engaging,

    • I’m quite sure it would be allowed to happen in many places. It is not really very loud, just right.

  8. I would love to have Sisto as my neighbor! His house is so attractive, even with all the speakers lined under the eaves.

    • A friend of his painted the planets on the house for him many years ago…very special.

  9. Looks and sounds like a guy who has totally found his place in the world and lives happily within it! Sadly have to agree with Paula that some spoilsport would have had the local council officers out here . . . and there is that old saying ‘use it or lose it’ 🙂 ! He looks about 50 or 60 ’cause he knows how to live . . .God bless!!

    • Sisto is a genuine character, we need more of these.

  10. How lucky for you to have such a dear man close by. Good neighbors are a very wonderful thing!

    • We often pass him on the track when he is chopping or collecting wood. There are some great people in Vergemoli.

  11. Great to see Sisto is back and well as ever! He must be doing something right because he definitely doesn’t look 80 years old!

    • It must be all the healthy mountain air.

  12. very young looking man for his age. i can only hope i can live that well. very nice pic. George Miori

    • Me too, perhaps I need to start chopping wood.
