The spaghetti harvest

I was just watching BBC World and delighting in the story of an April Fools’ Day hoax in 1957 about the spring spaghetti harvest, and thinking about finding the clip, when I opened a post from one of my favourite bloggers. Trust Frank, from A Frank Angle, to have already found it.

Please go to Frank’s post and enjoy this wonderful story. I’m sure it will make your April first.

Enjoy a plate of freshly picked spring spaghetti today.

I remember watching the ABC in Australia when I was about 13. The program informed us that gamma rays from our TV kept flies away. There was much family discussion about the scarcity of flies around our set.

  1. I remember this! Fabulous! You are right I think I will prepare spaghetti with olives and herbs today. Lovely spring day here.

    • It is a gorgeous day in Bagni di Lucca…I’m off to pick some spaghetti.

  2. Is it Buon Giorno di Pesce in Italy???

    • Yes, Pesce d’Aprile is today in Italy.

  3. It is nice to see some photos.

  4. The fact is that fewer brits had holidayed in Italy all those years ago and so they believed the story all the more – by the way i hope you’ve fixed cat’s eye reflectors on your shoes – compulsory wear in all Italian mountain comunes from today by special edict after 7.pm – you can buy them at Sandra’s shop in Villa.
    .

    • I’m heading off to Sandra’s right now to buy my reflectors.

  5. Thanks for the plug. Ironically, i didn’t know that the BBC reported it today, so cheers to coincidence!

    • Amazing coincidence! I had my IPad on my lap and opened your post while the BBC was talking about the story.

  6. It’s a hoot, I have come across this one before 🙂

    • I haven’t seen it before. I thought it was wonderful.

      • 🙂

  7. ha ha, brilliant!

    • Think it is wonderful, especially the bit about growing them all the same length.

  8. There is nothing better than a plate of fresh picked spaghetti. Love the old clip!

    • They clearly had a lot of fun making it.

  9. Well, I remember eating in Australia “spaghetti squash”, which is delicious. And you can certainly harvest it…
I have not been able to find it in Europe, though.

    • I have never seen that squash, I must hunt it down when I get back to Australia.

  10. I have never seen the footage of the spaghetti ‘trees’ but I have heard about it. It’s such a brilliant April Fool’s that I am not surprised it has stood the test of time.

    • It is nearly as old as me! It was very well done, I’m pleased I have finally seen it.

  11. Gosh, I love spaghetti. It just so happens that I am working backwards, trying to get to posts I missed, and I haven’t gotten to Frank’s yet. Guess I will go there now.

Sorry to have been away all weekend. I don’t know how many posts I may have missed, but it’s going to be a busy month for me–traveling to the beach, teaching a week-long workshop, and having friends visit from the US. Fun, but YIKES!

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    • It sounds like you are having a great time…keep it up.

  12. […] their 1957 … (or the post gave them the idea for the report.) A special thanks to Debra (at Bagni di Lucca & Beyond) for featuring my post in hers, which gave me a nice spike in […]

  13. Ha ha, I remember that and I always wonder how i would have reacted in 1957!! 🙂

  14. That’s fun – I’m sure I remembered Peter Sellers doing something similar, but, after a quick look, I couldn’t find it. I love the bit about gamma rays and flies – who knew! We bought a spaghetti squash at the farmers’ market in Manly. I hadn’t seen them for years.
