100 masterpieces from the Prado in Madrid are on display right now at the Queensland Art Gallery. I was there on opening day to see them. The exhibition tells the story of Spanish painting from 1550 to 1900 and it is the first time these works have been seen in Australia.
Photographs are not allowed inside the exhibition, so I will just show you around the edges.
The entrance.
This is actually a huge photo of the entrance to the Prado, which is at the entrance to the exhibition.
Sections of the gallery have been painted red for the exhibition.
I particularly love the huge flower arrangement in the foyer to represent the gorgeous still life paintings inside.
La Sala del Prado is a large scale lounge environment constructed in gallery beside the exhibition where you can sit and relax, have a snack at the cafe or draw your own still life with coloured pencils or multimedia tablets. It looks a bit empty in my photos, but I was early, it filled up very quickly.
There is no shortage of inspiration for your still life.
The exhibition runs from 21st July until 4th November 2012. Don’t miss it.
In conjunction with ‘Portrait of Spain’ there is a retrospective of films by Pedro Almodovar and a historical program 100 years of Spanish Cinema at GoMA cinema.

I really don’t want to miss that. Is the last photo a picture or a flower arrangement? It’s very lovely. I really want to borrow somebody’s grandchild and visit the Odditoreum at the library too.

Excellent. Of course it reminds me of our trip to Madrid. We arrived early Saturday morning with the hopes of staying as busy as possible as long as possible in order to adjust to the time change … and then there we were, falling asleep standing up in the Prado at 1 pm because we were so tired.

Lovely photographs! You captured the flavor of the paintings and the Prado so well. We had the good fortune to have spent 2 whole days in the Prado on a trip to Madrid. The Titians were to die for. Complimenti!

Oh Debra…you are so lucky to be there to see this exhibition. I’ve always wanted to visit The Prado after reading Betty Churcher’s latest book in which she describes the brilliance of “Las Meninas”/The Maids of Honour painted Diego Velåzquez. What a masterpiece this is!! The Louvre is still extraordinary with its Rubens, Vermeers, Rembrandts, Picassos et al…but, if I was home, this would be at the top of my TO DO list. A bientot.

The Queensland Gallery always presents an exhibition so beautifully. The La Sala del Prado is a great idea- I love the clever way they have still life options dotted around should you be inclined to pick up a pencil
