Deciding where to eat in Portovenere is never easy. There are lots of great looking places along the waterfront.
My favourite little fishing boat in its usual place.
There are also some interesting places in the street above the harbour.
We wandered up to the church on the point to see the gorgeous view.
Take a close look at the ledge. There are some old coins corroding there.
Directly below the church we spotted Le Bocche. It looked too good to pass by.
Lunch was delicious.
The restaurant is right at the end of the point where the boats pass on their way to Cinque Terre.
The day was overcast and a bit dull when we arrived, but steadily improved. By the time we left the water was sparkling in the sun.
Even the pigeons are relaxed here.
There are always lots of seaside souvenirs to buy.
Brand new figs are on the trees.
And the Signora is still waiting for her ship to come in.
It is good to know that some things don’t change.
Please, Deb. Please can I come and have lunch there with you? I want to sit at the edge of the cliff, and look out over the waves, and eat anchovies on toast.. xx

That statue of the Signora says it all. She looks so forlorn. She’s certainly waiting for a ship to come in.
Is Portovenere one of the Cinque Terre towns? I’ve been to the Cinque Terre, but it’s been so many years…

I always visit her when I go to Portovenere. I have done several posts on the town and she appears occasionally. Portovenere is just south of the Cinque Terre. It is 11 kilometres from La Spezia and in the season there are boats between the towns.

[…] Portovenere is on the Ligurian coast, just north of La Spezia. It is one of our regular day trips. We have also stayed overnight in the Grand Hotel, which offers fabulous views over the town. The coastline here is spectacular and there are a couple of tiny streets full of interesting shops, restaurants and places to buy delicious pesto, produced in the area from the very best basil. […]
