It’s a hive of activity at the stone house in Vegemoli

All of a sudden our stone house in Vergemoli is full of workmen. It seems to have been standing still for such a long time, but today when we went up there it was humming with activity.

The kitchen is taking shape.

The living room is full of stuff and the steps are in.

As you can see, the terra-cotta tiles have been laid.

The bathrooms are getting their tiles.

The volcanic stone door way has a chestnut door.

The bedrooms are full of stuff and all the gorgeous double glazed chestnut windows are in.

There is much discussion between the builder, geometra, electician, tilers etc, etc.

20120509-103532.jpg

Inside, and outside the discussion goes on.

Outside spring is happening.

20120509-103806.jpg

Green lizards are basking in the sun and the weeds are growing like mad.

Water is pouring from the spring.

And the view is still gorgeous.

Soon I will be able to show you a finished house.

  1. So exciting, the kitchen is lovely already and the doorway is super gorgeous. What a great project.

    • It is really starting to look great inside. I can’t wait to see it all done.

  2. Congratulations, what an achievement. Will it be finished before you come back to Brisbane?

    • The answer is Yes and No. We are due to leave next Monday, but it won’t be ready before then, so I am staying longer so that I can furnish it ready to rent.

  3. That looks so lovely – I love the doorway, the door and windows. That ‘weed’ (second photo under the lizard) looks very much like the herb yarrow. It’s not used in cooking as far as I recall but I think it’s used to repel moths and the like; the leaves smell quite nice and has quite an attractive little flower.

    • I’ll be picking that yarrow, thanks for the tip.

  4. It is wonderful Debra. Congrats!

  5. Gorgeous!! Almost there. I love your traditionall door and windows. Where does the spring water go?
I’m sure you’re upset that you’re forced to spend a little more Spring time in Italy. Enjoy it.
Don’t you just love those green lizards!!!

    • We will be using the spring water for the house. I would eventually like a rock waterfall with a stone basin at the bottom….next year.

      • Wonderful! Aesthetically and practically.

We have an empty reservoir over an old laundry tub at our place in Cembroni and I’d love to get it working again. We’re told there may have been a spring running down the mountain and into it at some stage but there’s no sign of it now. We’ve talked about directing roof runoff into the reservoir but it takes a while to turn talk into action.

  6. Your kitchen is beautiful and I love, just love your front door! Looks like spring has finally arrived.

    • That is our back door, isn’t it gorgeous? It used to be the front door, but it faces into the mountain and we have made a double door on the other side with a terrace in front to take advantage of the views.

  7. It’s lovely, the rooms are HUGE! What a beautiful, light, spacious place!

    • On the ground floor there is just the living room and kitchen, the first floor has the main bedroom and bathroom and a study and extra toilet and the top floor has 2 more bedrooms and bathrooms. All the rooms ar a good size. It is a lovely house with views from every room.

  8. Wow! It looks amazing Deb

    • It will be even better in a few weeks.

  9. Love to have a look at it next month Debra

    • I will give you the full tour.

  10. It looks lovely and also looks like it’s almost ready to live in. Your chestnut door is absolutely beautiful.

    • The door is gorgeous. I hope it finds a lovely owner.

  11. So exciting! Does that mean you’re going to have the plumbing you’re hoping for when you camp there shortly?

    • With a bit of luck I will have plumbing and electricity.

  12. OOh Debra!!! I am so excited for you. I love the look of the terra cotta tiles and the chestnut timber….But it’s all beautiful. Looking very understated and elegant and still rustic. I’m here should the guys need a hand sorting out those discussions. Just give me 24 hours. 😉 Jxx

    • Come on over and help me decorate it.

      • What can I say Debra? If you insist 😉 I would love to!! How much longer are you in Italy?

      • I will be here for another 5 weeks.

  13. Everything looks so crisp and fresh. It all looks lovely!

    • I think it is going to be a beautiful house.

  14. Your vision is now a reality. Well done everyone who has been part of this lovely house. Love the windows and doorway, and by the time you have made those curtains and furnished it with special pieces I am sure it will look fabulous
    Di

    • I am really happy with the way it is growing.

  15. Hi! Looks like all of the workmen showed up AT ONCE just like you said they would. Congrats on making so much progress after such a long journey. Any electricity for you yet?

    • Not quite, but I’m hoping it will be there by the time I stay there.

  16. Your House is beautiful – love everything about it. What a wonderful front door. I bet you can hardly wait until it is finished. Look forward to the pictures.

    • That door way is wonderful. I think I want to walk in and out of it all day.

  17. Oh dear Debra, seems that there were busy days there… But the hardest works seem that all completed… Congratulations and Good Luck for your new house… everything is so beautiful… I can imagine how you decorate… You are such a nice one for this… Thank you, with my love, nia

    • I will be keeping it fairly simple as the house will be for rent and eventually for sale.

  18. Even weeds look more luscious in Italy. Looking forward to seeing your house when it’s completed. Watching it through the process must be very exciting for you.

    • The weeds are spectacular aren’t they, it seems a pity to get rid of them.

  19. It’s a gorgeous house with a stunning view, Deb. I only wish I had the money to buy it. Can’t wait to see photos of the finished product. You’ve done an amazing job.
    Hugs,
    Kathy

    • I can’t take any credit yet, my part comes when the builders leave and I get to decorate it.

  20. Deb, I can’t believe how quickly this has come along! It looks amazingly light and airy!

    • It is moving quickly now, but there have been a few slow months.

  21. SO pretty! When is it going to be completed? I love stone houses! I lived in one while I was a nanny in France. It kept so nice and cool in the summer.

    • I’m hoping it will be all finished by mid June.

  22. After all the hard work, let the decorating begin. LOL, Have fun, and congrats Debra!

    • I can’t wait to stay there and start doing things.

  23. Sorry, I sent my message through as annon by mistake ( may 10. 5.15pm) and so once again congratulations on your achievement and will the fit out of the house be finished before you return to Brisbane. eK

    • Thank you. I WILL be finished in June.

  24. I was just wondering how the house was going Debra! 🙂

    • I haven’t talked much about it recently because there was nothing much to photograph.

  25. Heard that you are staying a little longer, how exciting to see the completion so close. Looking fabulous.
Will you still be coming home via Helsinki?? We will be there from 11th June, would be great to catch up………….. ciao

    • I will be there 23rd and 24th June.

  26. Wow! And what luxury to have all those workers to do the hard slog for you.

    • I know! I don’t think I could build a house from scratch even though I am the daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece etc of builders.

      • We just feel like we’ve built a whole house!

  27. hahahaha … look at your pictures are very entertaining. so have the desire to document my activities everyday …

  28. It looks really beautiful. Looking forward to see more.

  29. Some nice looking weeds there! All looking great. Must be getting excited for it to finish.

  30. good luck with the house, looks great.
