Villa Borghese – Rome

It is always good to spend some time in the beautiful Borghese Gardens in Rome.  When the crowds start to become annoying, take a stroll in the quiet, green space in the heart of Rome.

If you only have time for one gallery while in Rome, make it this one.  It is small and accessible, and full of gorgeous things in a beautiful setting.  The original sculptures and paintings in the Borghese Gallery date back to Cardinal Scipione’s collection.  The Cardinal was drawn to works of ancient, Renaissance and contemporary art.  Scipione Borghese was an early patron of Bernini and a collector of works by Caravaggio.  Both artists are well represented in the gallery – reason enough to go there.

Roman pines

These pine trees are all over Italy, but to me they mean Rome.  I love the flat tops.  They must be trimmed while growing to be this shape.  Make sure you spend some time in these gardens if you come to Rome.  Pretend you are Roman for just a little while.

  1. Deb, you really do take the best photos. I was inspired by you recently to take my camera out to Sydney and try and take photos of the buildings – but all the photos were rubbish! 🙂

    • I don’t believe that your photos are no good. The ones you take in your home and garden are great. I love my Canon G11. I don’t photoshop anything – mostly because I don’t know how – they are just as they come off the camera. Thanks for the compliment!

  2. I must be developing a tree thing…, the Roman pines are brilliant, what cute tops they have & Wow.., what a meanie face that fountain near the gallery is wearing.

  3. you love this place, don’t you Deb? lololol

  5. Gosh I can’t imagine what it would be like running around there. Certainly a great way to take in the area.
(ps. I love my canon too 🙂

  6. Deb, this is one of my favourite galleries in Rome also, the whole experience of walking through the gardens to get to the gallery is so peaceful and nice to get away from the bustle of Rome when you feel like a break.

  7. “How very happy I am here in Rome when I think of the bad days
Far back there in the north, wrapped in a grayish light.
    Over my head there the heavens weighed down so dismal and gloomy;
Colorless, formless, that world round this exhausted man lay.
Seeking myself in myself, an unsatisfied spirit, I brooded,
Spying out pathways dark, lost in dreary reflection.
Here in an ather more clear now a luster encircles my forehead.
Phoebus the god evokes forms, clear are his colors by day.
Bright with the stars comes the evening, ringing with songs that are tender,
And the glow of the moon, brighter than northern sun…”
