A Paris food market

There are many wonderful food markets in Paris, but my favourite was one that was close to our apartment on Ile St Louis. I came upon it by accident on one of my daily walks. I didn’t realise it was close to the island as I found it in a roundabout way.

One day I walked across the bridge, took a nearby short street and found the market at the end of it. There is a cluster of fabulous shops which are permanent and a few times a week a tented market appears.

The permanent shops include a bakery (La Maison d’Isabelle) that has a long queue every day, a specialist cheese shop, a deli and more.

The temporary stalls have fruit and vegetables, cheese, preserves, fish, meat and food prepared and cooked on the spot. My favourite was North African food cooked by a family. I went as often as I could to have a delicious pastille au poulet. I was disappointed if I rounded the corner to find no tents!

There are other stalls as well. I wish I was in need of a hat.

Don’t miss this excellent corner of Paris…Place Maubert, cnr Boulevard St Germain and Rue de La Montaigne Sainte-Genevieve. It is not far from the excellent Cluny Museum, the subject of my previous post.

  1. OMG Debra,
    STOP ALREADY OK?
Why do we not have more food like this in Victoria, B.C. Canada.
One has to hunt and peck for these groceries and when found, they are ‘over the moon ‘ $$$$$$

    • The food at this market was incredible! I wish I could shop there every day.

    • OH yes Debra. It would be wonderful to have these markets in every suburb here. We enjoy & think our West End Harris Farm wonderful but that one market in Paris leaves us wishing we could visit.

      • We have great food here, but this is another level.

  2. This looks like my idea of heaven Debra! I was going to visit Paris for a few days next year when visiting Rose in London but with the Olympic Games on I might wait.

    • You would probably only have to avoid Paris for a short while. The city is being cleaned up for the games. It is all looking great.

  3. The reason why those markets remain and thrive is that most French housewives do their food shopping daily, not weekly. Yes, they also go to supermarkets, but to purchase non perishable goods. Fresh food is purchased daily.

    • I like to shop daily too. The small prepared dishes were excellent. It is easy to be a good cook with all these wonderful products.

  4. Oh, my goodness – it’s not just what is available but the beauty of the presentation – did you buy any Samphire? I’d love to know what that is like. One life is simply not enough!

    • I did not try the samphire. It certainly looks interesting. A month in Paris was not enough! I need to go back often.

  5. After looking at so many wonderful treats can I possibly ever eat Vegemite & toast – just amazingly presented

    • Paris is full of edible delights.

  6. I LOVE the Ile St Louis! I’ve only visited there during the day during trips to Paris, never stayed so I’ve missed the markets. Thank you for taking us along 🙂

    • We loved our month on Ile Saint Louis. It was a perfect place to stay in Paris, close to everything we wanted to see and be part of.

  7. For some reasons the foods at these fabulous French markets are always amazing. It is always such a delight to wonder around and find their specialities. Great photos Deb.

    • The French do markets very well. I wish that one was nearby here in Brisbane.
