My favourite beach

I love Main Beach on Queensland’s Gold Coast. I grew up there and even though it has changed considerably since I was a child, it is a place I will adore forever.

I think the best time to be at the beach is sunrise.

It is great to have the beach to yourself (almost) for a while.

I have been a beachcomber all my life. I love to see what has been washed up by the waves.

As the day warms up people arrive to swim, surf or just stroll along the white sand.

Highrise buildings keep growing beside the beach at Surfers Paradise, but the beach is still wonderful.

Late afternoon is another great time to walk beside the water.

Who can resist moonlight on the water?

  1. WOW! These are wonderful photographs dear Debra. It came so good to me to watch them, while it was snowing outside now 🙂 I agree with you it is the best place to watch the sun… so beautiful. And how amazing the image with the buildings… Thank you dear, have a nice day, love, nia

    • Main Beach is great. I love the surf, and walking on that white sand is wonderful.

  2. Great work Deb, Merry Christmas.
    Love Russ

    • Same to you…you would know this place well.

  3. You have captured Main Beach Debra! I remember camping there as a child and having many wonderful times there. I must go there again soon…….

    • The camping ground is still there, but it is much more flash than it was when I was a girl.

  4. I have been there! Gorgeous photos.

  5. Thanks for sharing the beauty of one of your special places. BTW – when do you return to your other one?

    • I love that place…and I leave for Italy on 16th January, with a stop in Hong Kong to visit friends and a couple of days in snowy Helsinki before arriving in Bagni di Lucca.

      • Heck … sounds like a wonderful trip just to get there!

  6. Great Pictures. What a lovely beach.
Merry Christmas Debra and safe travels next year.
    Pam

    • Merry Christmas to you too. Main Beach will always be my favourite beach.

  7. As much as I adore the Meditertanean and summers in Europe there is nothing to compare to the splendor of our Aussie beaches- Surfers still looks just as magnificent as I remember . Thanks for the memories !

    • I love the magnificent Italian coastline, but if I actually want to swim, it has to be at a white sandy beach.

  8. It is also our favourite beach. When we lived in Australia, we always went there and tried to live within walking distance. Your photos bring back many wonderful memories! Thanks, Debra!

    • I would love to be able to walk on the beach every morning.

  9. I love beaches too!

    • Every time I go I wonder why I don’t do it more often.

  10. What? No beach umbrellas? No middle aged men walking around in Speedos? No crowds of families? Wow. No wonder you love that beach! 🙂 As always, love your photos!

    • Main Beach never gets as crowded as Surfers, and I was there mid week just before the beginning of the holidays. This week the beach would no doubt be full of families and umbrellas and the odd speedo.

  11. Agree with Diane -yes they are magnificent photos of one of the best stretches of beach in Australia – but sometimes there are those middle aged guys in Speedos and lots of umbrellas. Plenty of sand to share.

    • There is nothing wrong with budgie smugglers…if you’ve got it, flaunt it.

  12. Very nice photos. Especially love the beaches.

    • We have beautiful beaches in Australia.

  13. Sunrise is such a lovely time of the day…usually you don’t have to share it with a lot of people. The solitude is wonderful and beautiful.

    • I have to be up very early to have the beach to myself.

  14. I adore that photo of the moonlight dancing on the water! 😀

    • It was a gorgeous evening on the beach.

  15. What a stunning place, Debra. 🙂 Merry Christmas to you.

    • It was a great place to grow up.

  16. Awesome images, it is definitely one of the nicer beaches on the Gold Coast and being on the sand when the sun rises is one of life’s simple pleasures.

    • Main Beach has always been a bit apart. When we first went there it wasn’t sewered and there were no buildings over 3 storeys. What a pity that changed.

  17. We had an apartment in Broadbeach for many years when I was growing up Debra…This time of year always takes me back there as do your gorgeous photos. I love the found objects. It makes me realise how I might look at my old beach with different eyes these days.

    • I grew up at Main Beach in the 50s and 60s and left in the early 70s when I went to Italy for the first time. We must have been there at the same time for a while there. It was a wonderful time to be there.

      • How lovely. We probably passed each other walking on the beach. I was a walker even then!

      • Me too! I was there scouring the beach for washed up stuff.

  18. Maybe try Finnish beaches by the lakes like Saimaa or Päijänne?

    • I would love to visit some Finnish beaches. I will be back in January, not the best time, and again at the end of May. If the weather is good then I will investigate…thanks for the tips.

  19. Great photos!

Merry Christmas to you and your family! We’re having a heatwave here so it’s difficult to get in the mood.

    • I hope you and Willie have a great Christmas too. It is horribly hot and humid here, which doesn’t please me at all.

  20. Deb,

The Main Beach post made me quite homesick for QLD especially as the London weather is the absolute pits at the moment. I think what I miss the most is the early swim (or surf) and then a run/walk with the hot sun on your back.
    Vitamin D dose….

Wishing you both a Happy and Holy Christmas and a prosperous 2013.

    regards

    PB

    • It is hot and humid here right now. I wish I was at Main Beach too. The beach is the best place to be in weather like this. I hope you all have a great Christmas in cold London.

  21. Some stunning photographs. Those skyscrapers don’t look real. Looks like a wonderful beach.
