Bibury is a delightful Cotswold village in Gloucestershire. It sits quietly on the River Colin, a tributary of the Thames. William Morris (1834-96j, writer, artist, poet and textile designer, described Bibury as “the most beautiful village in England”.
Arlington Row is a row of weavers’ cottages built of local stone beside the river. It was originally built as a monastic wool store in 1380, until the building was converted into the cottages in the 17th century. They are often referred to as the most photographed cottages in the country.
We walked along the river past more beautiful houses.
The Saxon church, the Church of St Mary, was built in the 11th century. It was restored in 1863 and again in the 19th century.
The oldest of the stained glass is from the 13th century with more recent additions.
I find the graves in old church grounds fascinating, a glimpse of a another time.
The church is surrounded by pretty gardens. The roses were in bloom.
We stopped for coffee and cake in this lovely setting. I think it was the Swan Hotel. I should have paid more attention.
After our delightful visit to Cornwall we went to Oxford to visit our friends Anup and Poorna. Just like last year Anup became the perfect tour guide. He drove us through the stunning countryside around Oxford. The next post will be about Cirenchester, another fabulous Cotswold town
