Chiavari beside the sea

On our way north to Piedmonte recently we stopped for lunch in Chiavari. It is quite close to the autostrada so it was a good choice. It was a glorious sunny spring day, perfect for lunch beside the sea. The historical town centre looked interesting…another day.

The town overlooks the sea on the Ligurian Gulf of Tigullio. It was once a medieval village and it is possible to walk along the caruggi of Chiavari, a 3 kilometre path lined with medieval arcades, ancient churches, monuments  and historic buildings.

There is a pretty 2 kilometre promenade along the waterfront, lined with small restaurants. I’m sure these will be filled with people soon.

The coastline is protected by rows of rocks making for a safe beach for families with children.

The beach doesn’t attract me, but I can see the appeal of sitting beside the sea enjoying lunch on a warm, sunny day. I would definitely like to return to explore the Centro Storico. I’m sure this pretty town is now full of people enjoying the seaside.
