The way in

What is it about old doorways that is so fascinating? These weathered entrances hold many tales…we wish they could speak and tell us of the years of comings and goings.

This little collection comes from Castiglione di Garfagnana, the site of a previous post.

There is an endless supply of these treasures in the ancient villages in our little bit of Tuscany.

  1. Love that staircase with the loggia on top.

    • Me too. I love the jumble of added bits.

  2. I’m very fascinated by them too and have quite a collection of photos

    • So do I. There have been many doors over the years.

  3. Your posts are giving me that urge to visit. Love the rustic doors.

    • So many people have passed through these doors.

  4. So much history has passed through these doorways……I am letting my imagination run wild at the moment……

    • A time lapse camera would have been great.

  5. They have such character and elegance (except, perhaps, for the really rustic ones albeit that they have charm) – the ostentatious McMansions of today just don’t compare – and I doubt that they will last as long.

    • Some of these doors would be hundreds of years old, they would have seen a lot.

  6. It would be fascinating to see what is inside!

    • Yes, I would love a peek inside.

  7. Love old beauty. I guess it’s wondering about its history; what goes on behind closed doors…

    • Some of these doors are very basic. I think they would open to reveal a modest life.

  8. I totally agree with you. Doors have soul. And there’s always that implicit invitation to enter. I love them, and these are really beautiful. Thank you Deb!

    • I wonder about the lives of the generations of people who lived behind the doors.

  9. Love the first two. Louise

    • It is an interesting catch on the second one.

  10. Nice story, I enjoyed it!

    • Thank you, I was quite taken by the doors in Castiglione de Garfagnana.

  11. Great photos – I particularly like the second one, the old wooden door in the stone wall with the little log barring entrance, carefully placed.

    • That one was quite high, beside a church. I have no idea what it would have been for.

  12. My daughter had this fascination too when she hiked the Comino!

    • She must have seen many doors.

      • And took too many photos of them!

  13. These are simply stunning Debra! How long are you in Italy for? Oh you know how much I truly love your posts. 😊

    • I am here for just 6 weeks. I am here to get the garden at Casa Debbio pruned and ready for winter.

      • Wonderful Debra! Your garden is absolutely amazing!!! I love watching it grow

  14. I like the last door – the tiny blue wicket in the massive portal.

  15. I love photographing doorways too! When I was in Oman and Jordan I saw so many I wanted to stop and take pics of! 🙂

  16. These are all wonderful. Please feel free to come share them on Thursday Doors.
