I have photographed faces, bottoms and feet on my travels. Now it is time for hands.
Oceano in the Bargello in Florence.
The little fisherman in the Bargello.
David’s hand.
Pisano’s hand. He created the beautiful sculptures on the facade of the Duomo in Siena, among other things.
Hands at Neptune’s fountain in Florence.
Piazza Navona hands.
Little hands in Lucca.
Piazza Signoria hand.
Hand throwing in Antwerp.
Chocolate hands in Antwerp.
An interesting candle in Haarlem.
A seat in Amsterdam.
Beautiful painted hands.
Hands making cheese.
Hands rolling pasta.
Hands making baskets.
What marvellous observations of hands, Debra! I was intrigued by Michaelangelo’s exquisite sculpture of David’s hands – the protruding veins, the elegant shapes of the fingers. It’s difficult to capture the realism of hands in art, and nothing beats real hands in real life – young and old – through your camera lens, Debra. All in the joy of art!

I agree hands are a purposeful metaphor for real life- all so diverse, in so many cases so ordinary and practical.

I can’t imagine what it would be like not to have the use of my hands. They may not be as young and lovely as they once were, but I like them.

Love the lady’s hard working clever hands in that last picture taken in Sardinia making the twin to the basket you bought.

BEAUTIFUL. Gorgeous. Touching. Amazing how much humanity can be trapped inside a piece of stone, until some genius sets it free…the hands of David look as if blood is pulsing through them. Never ceases to amaze…

I love the hand with the pearl bracelets. The detail in that painting is amazing. One of the Flemish masters… I guess

I think it was Rembrandt, but I saw so many beautiful things I am a bit confused. It was at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Thank you, Debra. Yes, it is the portrait of Maria Trip, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, by Rembrandt. A wonderful painting.

Debra – awesome post! There was just a photo contest this week and the theme was hands. Out of all the posts I’ve seen for the contest this one is a winner. I’m submitting this link to the list of hands, hope you don’t mind.
My favourite one is the little hands in Lucca, how cute!

Wonderful photos of hand, possibly my favorite visual subject! I recently featured hands in a music video 🙂 There is something about images of hands making things that always speaks to me – you’ve captured it exactly in your photos. My favorite Italian hand sculpture is the colossal statue in the Capitoline Museum in Rome – I’ve used my photos of it many times as source material for hands.
