Raindrops keep falling on my head

our street

Or, at the very least, my umbrella and my roof.   This is the wettest summer I can remember in Brisbane.  We used to have hot, wet summers regularly.  I can recall shoes going mouldy in the wardrobe and mildew forming in all sorts of places, but it has been a long time since this has happened.  In the not too distant past, pool owners were almost threatened with lynching, because of the waste of water, now some of those pools are under water.

rain, rain, go away

Floods have devastated much of Queensland and we have had flash flooding in suburban Brisbane.  Luckily, we have escaped damage so far, but everything around us is sodden.

Normally at this time of the year we are surrounded by beautiful flowering poincianas and frangipanis, but the rain has been so heavy that many trees are flower free.  I took some photos before the deluge.

The crazy weather has made for some interesting skies.

We are very lucky to be just wet, when so many people have lost everything in these terrible floods.  I can’t imagine how awful it would be to go back to your home to find everything ruined.  Let’s hope things get better soon.

  1. Deb, gorgeous photos as always, glad you’ve avoided most of the flooding. It’s been almost unbelievable to see the photos…

    • I can’t imagine how awful it would be to have to clean out sludge from your house and to lose precious things. I know they are just things, but it would be heartbreaking just the same.

  2. Glad your safe & snug Debra. Floods are just awful & so many people have been devastated by floods in Qld, the pics are mind blowing. Great sunset pic from your balcony & just love the frangipanis, my fave flower 🙂

    • Thank you.

  3. My heart just sinks a bit lower every time I see any of the flood pictures. So many people effected by the rains. It would be truly gutting losing everything you own.

    Beautiful pictures though Debra.

  4. Some of the news footage is quite amazing. I’m glad to hear that you were spared it and yes being wet is much more preferable to what is happening in some areas. This is crazy weather!

  5. Beautiful photos, especially those two flowers. Hope you aren’t getting hit as bad as QLD.

    • We are in Brisbane, South East Queensland. We are OK, except for flooded streets occasionally, but inland is very bad and the rain just doesn’t stop. It has rained heavily all day again today.

  6. nice post!!

but nothing can be as wonderful as rain even if it kills us!!1

    • We certainly need rain, pity we can’t control it.

  7. Gotta love Australia – it’s either a drought or a flood. Makes you wonder why we live here!

    • It certainly has been a bit extreme lately. Mind you, Dorothea Mackellar wrote about it a while ago, in My Country – I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of drought and flooding rains… published 1908. It has happened before and will again.

  8. Love the Poincianas ( lovely street scape trees ) and the Frangipanis.
Terrible flooding in Qld. causing loss of property, crops, livestock, native wildlife and most devastating of all, loss of human lives.

Hope the people affected get the support and financial help they need.

    Cheers Judy

    • Hopefully people will be able to return home for the clean up soon.

  9. Wow, it is bucketing down. And looks like there is more to come. I hope that the people affected badly in the North are able to get assistance quickly and that when the flood waters recede, they have the tenacity to clean up and start again. I feel so sorry for them.

  10. Not so nice to have rainy summers…. the trees are great, specially the ones with the red flowers. I love the Tiaré flower, it’s so beautiful…
